What’s to Come in 2021

Something I want to commit to in 2021 is learning something every month. So, what I’ll be practicing this year is learning a new hobby or practicing a new habit each month. Last year, I felt like I was in a rut most of the year, I wasn’t really learning anything new unless I absolutely had to, and just kind of felt stuck. Now, I also want to acknowledge that 2020 was one of the hardest years that I’ve lived through. 2020 was trash.

I want to make 2021 a better year for myself, so I’m committing to this because I just generally love learning. I haven’t decided what I’ll be doing each month. I’m already working on a habit that I’d like to stick with for this month, but I won’t be sharing what I’ve worked on until the end of the month.

I’ve noticed that when I share the ideas that I have or plans that I’d like to fulfill on social media or with the people I’m close with, I end up not doing them. I’ve read a bit about how when people praise you for your ideas, it gives you the feeling of fulfillment that you would normally get from completing the task. This is definitely how my brain operates. The other reason I’m not sharing is that sometimes it feels like I’ve added pressure to myself if I share my goals. That people will be disappointed in me if I don’t make my goals. I know that people are more forgiving and kind than I give them credit for, but I don’t want to put that added pressure on myself. This year I’ll be keeping my goals where I can see them and others will see the result of them when I’ve gotten to a point where I can share. I’m excited to see how I’ve grown at the end of each month!

For Medium, I’m going to be doing a wider range of written content. We’ll see some more game reviews, event recaps, and tech writing. I also want to write more about other topics that I’m interested in, so I’m excited to share some more of my interests with yall this year!

Other than that, this year the goal that I will share is to read 36 books. This month, the books I’m planning on reading and finishing are:

  1. The City We Became by N.K. Jemisin

  2. Intersectional Tech by Dr. Kishonna Gray

  3. Emergent Strategy by adrienne maree brown

What are yall reading this year? Are there books that should be on my radar? I’m also looking to finish the Earthsea Cycle by Ursula K. LeGuin this year. I’ll finally have the complete series in print and I’m eager to finish up the series.

Check back at the end of each month to see what I’ve been learning! I’m looking forward to being on the journey with you all. I’m also excited to share more about the books that I’ll be reading! So be on the lookout for a recap of my monthly books as well!

What’s something that you’d like to do in 2021? Let me know!
